Attorney Cody Cogswell
You can find Attorney Cody P. Cogswell at the intersection of I-69 and someplace where dedication, expertise, and a passion for justice meet. Primarily based in Indianapolis, Cody Cogswell is a true Hoosier, committed to serving the community with the convictions of a young attorney and the mindset of a seasoned litigator, pouring his heart into causes dear to him.
A Hoosier at Heart
Cody was born and raised in the charming town of Moonsville, Indiana, (known for having just one pop machine in the center of town at its one intersection). Cody spent much of his childhood out in Moonsville on his grandparents’ farm. His Hoosier upbringing instilled in him a strong work ethic and deep-rooted values that continue to guide his practice today. After graduating from Anderson High School with an Academic Honors Diploma, Cody attended Ball State University, earning a degree from the Political Science Department’s ABA-Approved Legal Studies Program.
Academic Achievements
Cody’s academic journey continued at the Thomas M. Cooley School of Law, where he was awarded a Scholarship for Academic Performance. While there, he was a key member of the U.S. Championship Team for Client Counseling and graduated Cum Laude with a specialization in Litigation in January 2012. Soon after, he passed the bar exam and was admitted to practice in Indiana.
Legal Experience
Cody began his legal career with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, where he contributed to the Indiana Consumer Protection group, specifically within the Identity Theft Division. After law school, Cody declined multiple “Big Law” opportunities to return to his roots in Anderson, Indiana. He accepted a position as an associate attorney at Daniel Whitehead’s office. However, his drive to help people on his terms and desire to own his own practice, led him to opening his own law office sharing space with a very well respected, semi-retired, estate planning and probate Attorney Charlie Braddock. The fortune of having Charlie nearby as a mentor guided Cody in areas other than law – more of what is not taught in law school and they practiced in very different areas of law – further deepened Cody’s roots in Anderson, and the history of the community. Although Charlie now lives in South Carolina 90% of the year, they remain close and help each other if ever needed.
With this strong foundation, Cody expanded his practice with close friend and attorney, Christopher Gilley and grew into the top floor of the First Merchant’s Tower, the tallest building in Anderson. As time carried on, and the firm having grown into CGS Law Group, the firm took over David J. Steele’s law practice in Carmel, Indiana after Steele was disbarred for stealing from clients. Law office whistleblower key in disbarment – The Indiana Lawyer Cody and the firm continued to work at little to no cost for Steele’s clients who had been wronged. The team wanted to help those who had been harmed by Steele and let the public know that most attorneys are not like Steele. The volume of work kept all of the partners busy with Cody spending much of his time in Carmel and the rest in Anderson. The firm eventually divided but Cody maintained a strong clientele in Anderson. Cody moved his office to Fishers. A few years later, Attorney Joshua A. Martin, Attorney Stephen Thompson, and Attorney Gabriel Berry purchased the Garrison Law Firm from the well renowned attorney, and current Hamilton County Prosecutor, Greg Garrison, and opened a satellite office in Anderson. Cody continues to proudly serve clients in Anderson, the heart of Madison County, Indianapolis, all the counties surrounding Marion County, and has traveled much of the state.
Cody also spent some time to teaching at his alma mater, Ball State University, as an adjunct professor, sharing his expertise with future legal professionals in the legal studies department.
Expanding Practice
Cody’s practice areas include Family Law, Criminal Defense, Personal Injury, Probate, and Estate Law. Cody is particularly committed to providing legal services to those who cannot afford them, having been appointed to hundreds of Civil and Criminal cases as a Public Defender in Madison County. The firm is at capacity for handling pro bono cases. Rather, he and his staff have been working on a number of other projects to assist people facing financial difficulties during legal proceedings.
Personal Life and Interests
Outside of his legal work, Cody is a family-oriented individual and a proud uncle to several nephews and nieces. He enjoys golf, chess, poker, fishing, boating, and many other sports. As an avid Indianapolis Colts fan, Cody can often be found cheering on his team at Lucas Oil Stadium. He also enjoys traveling and spending quality time with friends.
